6 Things You Must Do in Charlotte, NC

A poll done by a local real-estate company found that Charlotte, North Carolina‘s best neighborhood among locals and visitors is North Davidson Street or NoDa. The area is teeming with galleries, boutiques, newly renovated houses and eclectic residents and has quite a lot to offer.

At the turn of the 20th century, this neighborhood was developed with textile mills and “housing villages” for workers and families. Success of these mills helped to further develop the land so that the entire area turned into a large suburb of downtown Charlotte.

In the 1950’s the mills began to close, and the decline of the neighborhood continued for the next forty years. But, just as other industrial areas in the US, Charlotte attracted artists for the cheap rent and available space.

From 1990 up until the 2000’s the entire neighborhood was transformed and now hosts many the city’s arts and culture events. While there is a great deal of new development including a lot of modern housing, the neighborhood still has a lot of its original charm thanks in large part to the tight knit community.

So, what should you do while you’re in Mecklenburg County? These events and places appeal to visitors as well as locals:

Gallery Crawl

Offered on the first Friday of the month, this gallery crawl spans almost ten blocks. Local Eric Linne suggests starting at The Company Store, which is “like a local version of the TV show Cheers.” Then, head south stopping in one of the neighborhood’s 18 galleries.

Farmers Market

Charlotte Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 9 am to noon, year-round. The market organization is not for profit, meaning that farmers and vendors do not pay to participate, benefitting the community of Charlotte by the interaction between residents and local farmers. Support for the market comes from the local shops and fundraising.

Charlotte has a lot of great breweries, but the original is the Belgian centric Heist Brewery. It offers a modern yet rustic space with beers and a full cocktail and food menu. It has a great patio with a beer garden atmosphere.

Coffee Shops

If you’re out for a morning stroll, you can stop by Crown Station Coffee House and Pub, Trade and Lore or the cafĂ© across the street, Smelly Cat Coffee House & Roastery.

Boasting over 31 spots to eat or drink, it’s no wonder that most locals visit several places on one night. You can start your evening with drinks at one of the many breweries, then head to Haberdish for Carolina inspired cuisines such as fried chicken and southern vegetables. After dinner, you can head to 101 for cocktails and karaoke and then finish your evening at Benny Pennelo’s for a late night slice or Jack Beagles for mac and cheese.

One of the most exciting spots for shopping is at Blended Bartique, a women’s clothing store. While browsing for women’s clothes, you can have a cocktail and listen to music. If vintage is your thing, you can head to The Rat’s Nest. Charlotte also has a small bicycle shop, pet store, gift shop, liquor store and more.
